Event Recap
Friday night WWE SmackDown (September 5, 2025) in Chicago’s Allstate Arena was the sort of wild ride only the Windy City crowd could sell with this eclectic mix of nostalgia, hometown heat and chaotic interruptions. The night leaned into big personalities right from the get‑go, with John Cena making his final SmackDown appearance in Chicago, a place that’s seen him through so much of his career, and Sami Zayn answering his own US Title Open Challenge by having Cena right there across the ring. Their singles bout quickly dissolved into mayhem when Brock Lesnar thundered in, yanked the referee out and laid both men out with F5s, loudly declaring he would see Cena at Wrestlepalooza. That moment had half the arena buzzing and the other half groaning at yet another Lesnar ambush. Elsewhere on the card, Aleister Black brought his spooky, striking offense to a hard‑hitting win over Damian Priest, proving he is still the unpredictable force fans dig even if that kind of aggression feels like a “pick a lane” situation these days. Giulia defended her Women’s US Title against Michin, landing the Arrivederci Knee clean to retain and keep her momentum rolling as we march toward Wrestlepalooza. But the locker room buzz really peaked when AJ Lee returned, her music hit and out she came to back up CM Punk against Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch, a surprise that got genuine “holy shit” chants from the crowd and feels like it could mean a lot more down the road. All told, SmackDown delivered real fireworks, some ugh moments from Lesnar’s predictable smash and dash, and enough nostalgia to have fans talking well into the weekend.

Summary
John Cena’s return inside the squared circle in Chicago was built as a feel‑good moment that turned sour in the most WWE way possible. Cena came out to a huge reaction for what was billed as his final SmackDown appearance in the Windy City and agreed to face Sami Zayn with the U.S. Title on the line, a callback to Zayn’s own debut years earlier. The two clashed with surprising intensity, with Cena hitting his signature Attitude Adjustment and even adding a handful of tribute‑style moves that got the crowd fired up. Zayn wouldn’t stay down either and countered back with his own offense, including a Helluva Kick for a close near fall. Just as it felt like they were building to a classic Chicago barnburner, Brock Lesnar came out, yanked the referee out of the ring and dropped both men with multiple F5s. With the ref incapacitated and both competitors laid out, the match was ruled a no contest, leaving Cena’s final SmackDown match unresolved and setting up a future Lesnar showdown.

Summary
This bout was a gritty clash between two fighters who seem like they could steal any mid‑card scene when given time. Aleister Black and Damian Priest went toe‑to‑toe with contrasting styles, Black’s striking precision against Priest’s bigger, brutal power. Black opened strong with some stiff kicks that kept Priest guessing, while Priest answered with a couple of heavy clubbing blows and a big reverse STO onto the ring apron that got the crowd’s attention. Inside the ropes, Black found his chance, slipping out of a Priest setup and landing a crisp Black Mass that planted Priest for the three‑count. It was exactly the kind of physical grind‑fest you’d expect from these guys — not overly long, not too flashy, just solid combat that let Black’s striking look sharp and Priest’s toughness take a hit while still keeping him credible.

Summary
The Women’s U.S. Title match was one of those competitive spots where you could tell the champion wasn’t just going through the motions. Giulia defended her belt against Michin, who brought energy and quick offense right from the opening bell. Michin locked in early holds and even had a few near fall opportunities that looked like she might steal the moment, but tactical lapses and a well‑timed distraction from Kiana James on the outside gave Giulia the opening she needed. Once Giulia regained control, she methodically grounded Michin and found space for her signature Arrivederci Knee that earned her the clean pinfall. It was a brisk, intense match that let Giulia look dominant while giving Michin a respectable showing, even if the finish felt just a little bit “expected.”
