Event Recap
Friday’s WWE SmackDown from the SAP Center in San Jose, California was a roller coaster of entertaining wrestling and frustrating finishes in typical WWE fashion. The show opened with Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair retaining their Women’s Tag Team Championships over NXT challengers Sol Ruca and Zaria in a match that had promise but ultimately felt snagged at every turn. The United States Title picture finally got a serious shake‑up when Ilja Dragunov returned and dethroned Sami Zayn with an H‑Bomb for the pin, which had the crowd buzzing about real competition for that belt again. In tag team action the Motor City Machine Guns reminded everyone they still know how to tag team with a clear win over Los Garza, giving the undercard some teeth. The main event was supposed to be Drew McIntyre versus Cody Rhodes for a future title shot, but with Jacob Fatu mysteriously taken out backstage it became a chaotic impromptu title fight. McIntyre looked strong overall, but Cody lost his cool and hit him with the Undisputed WWE Title, ending the bout by disqualification and keeping the title while leaving a mess of questions for next week. All told, this edition of SmackDown had its moments but wrapped leaving you pumped about Dragunov’s win and annoyed about the overbooked finish in the main event.

Summary
The opening title match featured Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair defending against Sol Ruca and Zaria from NXT, and it was one of those bouts that almost clicked more than it did. Zaria used her strength early to keep Bliss grounded and tagged in the much quicker Ruca to mix up the pace. Ruca even hit her Sol Snatcher on Flair and nearly scored a surprise pin before Blake Monroe’s distraction at ringside threw the challengers off their groove. Charlotte and Bliss eventually regained control, with Charlotte cutting off Ruca’s comeback attempt and locking in the Figure‑Eight Leglock until Ruca tapped out. It felt like the champs were just a step ahead of their challengers all night, and the win was convincing enough even if the challengers didn’t quite steal the show.

Summary
What a way to shake up the U.S. Title scene. Sami Zayn answered an open challenge, only to have Ilja Dragunov answer his challenge in a return match that brought real intensity. Both men threw heavy strikes and countered into near falls, with Zayn hitting his fair share of offense, but Dragunov kept coming back with his signature relentless aggression. In the late stretch Dragunov busted out his trademark exploder suplex and followed up with a crushing H‑Bomb to pin Zayn and become the new United States Champion. The crowd actually reacted like this was supposed to happen, even if some fans were still half in shock minutes after the bell.

Summary
This undercard tag was a fun, old‑school little breather in the show. Motor City Machine Guns brought their usual crisp teamwork and quick tags against Los Garza, who tried to mix in some high‑impact moves but couldn’t quite keep pace. Shelly hit a nice overhead suplex and Sabin connected on a Skull & Bones that looked textbook. Machine Guns kept it clean and straightforward, earning a solid, decisive win without any outside interference or shenanigans. It wasn’t revolutionary, but if you were craving team wrestling that actually functioned for a few minutes, this delivered.

Summary
What was supposed to be a number one contender showdown turned into a chaotic main event twist. Drew McIntyre and Cody Rhodes finally squared up after weeks of buildup, but before their scheduled match with Jacob Fatu could even start, Fatu was found laid out backstage and ruled unable to compete. That forced an impromptu title fight between McIntyre and Rhodes. They traded some hard shots early, Rhodes got fired up and even looked like he might take control, but then he lost it and struck McIntyre with the Undisputed WWE Title belt right in front of everyone. That blew up the match into a disqualification finish, meaning Cody retained the title without beating McIntyre clean. It was the kind of finish that gets people talking, but also the kind that makes you go “can we just finish a match normally once?” while you sip your weekend coffee.
