Event Recap
Friday night’s WWE SmackDown from the Moody Center in Austin, Texas delivered a stacked show as the road to Saturday Night’s Main Event and John Cena’s final match heated up. The night started with a quality battle for the United States Championship as Ilja Dragunov barely survived Carmelo Hayes’ challenge thanks to Tommaso Ciampa’s interference, retaining with a Torpedo Moscow and H‑Bomb. In singles action Alexa Bliss picked up a solid win over Kairi Sane, then took a beatdown with Nia Jax and Lash Legend afterward that screamed future tag title contention. Jade Cargill took care of Alba Fyre in a physical, quick bout that reinforced her dominant aura. The main event was the final of the big “Last Time Is Now” tournament, and Gunther steamrolled through LA Knight for the victory, setting himself up as John Cena’s final opponent at Saturday Night’s Main Event in a moment that had the crowd buzzing even if a chunk of fans would have preferred a Knight victory. Add in some heated backstage moments involving Drew McIntyre and Cody Rhodes and this was a SmackDown that balanced good wrestling with enough storyline fire to keep the week rolling into the weekend.

Summary
The U.S. Title Open Challenge pitted Ilja Dragunov against Carmelo Hayes in what started as a real back‑and‑forth fight between two guys who know each other’s tendencies well. Hayes fired off quick offense early, even hitting a tilt‑a‑whirl facebuster that got a reaction, but Ilja kept rallying with heavy strikes and counters that looked like they hurt. Just as Hayes was setting up his First 48 finisher, Tommaso Ciampa interfered, causing enough chaos for Dragunov to connect with Torpedo Moscow and then hit his H‑Bomb to score the pin and retain. This was one of those classic gritty SmackDown title defences that had both guys selling hard and keeping the crowd invested.

Summary
Alexa Bliss and Kairi Sane slugged it out in the ring with both women bringing big hits and a bit of character flare you don’t always see on a Friday night. Bliss took some heat early when Sane mocked her, but she kept firing back with quick strikes and smart counters. Bliss eventually caught Sane mid‑move and hit Sister Abigail for the win, which is always fun to see because it means Bliss is still playing her offense to get things done instead of hiding on the apron. After the match, Nia Jax and Lash Legend jumped the ring and took out both Bliss and Sane, then also laid into The Kabuki Warriors, which seemed like them saying “we are next for those Women’s Tag Titles.”

Summary
Jade Cargill handled Alba Fyre in a pretty straightforward fashion. Giulia and Kiana James showed up before the match and wreaked havoc on Women’s United States Champion Chelsea Green, leaving Fyre to fend for herself, and Cargill took full advantage. She powered through Fyre’s offense and eventually hit her Jaded finisher to score a decisive pinfall. It was explosive and direct, exactly the kind of match that makes Cargill look strong without overthinking the pacing.

Summary
The centerpiece of this SmackDown was the final of the “The Last Time Is Now” Tournament to decide who will face John Cena in his final match at Saturday Night’s Main Event. LA Knight brought his usual swagger and tried to control the pace with strong offense and stiff strikes, but Gunther was relentless from bell to bell. Gunther methodically wore Knight down, and despite a few spirited comebacks by Knight, he locked in heavy chops and big signature strikes that made this feel like a real statement match. In the end, Gunther scored the win and earned the opportunity to be John Cena’s final opponent, which is a huge notch in his belt even if a lot of fans were yelling for Knight.
