Event Recap
The January 2, 2026 SmackDown from the KeyBank Center in Buffalo was a wild way to kick off the new year and the first three‑hour blue brand show of 2026, and as a fan it felt like booting up a game on hard mode. The Miz opened the night by yammering about 2025 like he was hosting a roast, only for Randy Orton to blast him with two RKOs out of nowhere and make “Happy New Year” seem way more violent than it should’ve been, which absolutely got a reaction. Then there was the big eight‑woman tag as Rhea Ripley, IYO SKY, Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss teamed up to beat Asuka, Kairi Sane, Nia Jax and Lash Legend in a chaotic scrap that was fun but felt like WWE trying to give everybody something to do right away. Matt Cardona returned and beat Kit Wilson, which at least gave Cardona a moment going into 2026. Carmelo Hayes kept the United States Title against Johnny Gargano in a gritty match, while Giulia dethroned Chelsea Green to become the new Women’s United States Champion, finally giving that belt some life after a stagnant run. The big brawl of the night was an intense Ambulance Match where Damian Priest outlasted Aleister Black in a brutal fight that used everything from chairs to fire extinguishers and even saw Ripley help turn the tide. Outside the ring, Drew McIntyre laid out the Three Stages of Hell stipulations ahead of his big fight with Cody Rhodes, wrapping the night in simmering tension that has people talking. It was a loaded show with big moments, some head‑scratching bits, and enough unpredictability to keep a cynical fan entertained.
